Niall Horan's Health Struggles: Double Hip Operation Looms
Former One Direction member Niall Horan has candidly revealed his growing health concerns, expressing fears that he may soon need a double hip operation. The 32-year-old singer attributed his deteriorating condition to genetic factors, bluntly stating he was "f**ked from the day I was born" due to family history.
Genetic Predisposition and Family Health History
During an appearance on The Zach Sang Show podcast, Horan explained that his father, 66-year-old Bobby, recently underwent knee replacement surgery just eighteen months after a hip operation. Bobby is now preparing for another hip procedure, highlighting a pattern of joint issues within the family.
Horan noted that his uncle has also required two knee surgeries, reinforcing his belief that poor genetic inheritance is at the root of his own health challenges. Despite being significantly younger than his father, Horan remarked that the problematic genes were "clearly in there," jokingly adding that he was "ruined" from birth.
Previous Medical Interventions and Current Symptoms
The singer has already experienced multiple medical procedures, including knee reconstruction surgery in 2014 and injections in his other knee in 2023 after tearing a tendon. Horan now reports feeling both his knees and hips failing him, describing his knees as "f**ked" and his hips as "going now too."
This health update comes as Horan prepares for a six-date UK arena tour scheduled to begin in September, where he will perform music from his upcoming album Dinner Party, set for release on June 5.
Emotional Tribute to Liam Payne
Horan has also opened up about the emotional impact of former bandmate Liam Payne's tragic death in October 2024. The singer revealed that one track on his new album, titled End of an Era, addresses his grieving process following Payne's passing.
The song includes poignant lyrics such as: "We had it / Pure magic / Remember what it was like / Time passes / So fast and / I couldn't tell you goodbye." Horan described how he "went into hiding a little bit" after attending Payne's funeral with fellow One Direction members Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Zayn Malik.
Recalling the moment he learned of Payne's death, Horan shared: "I just remember getting a message, and I was just like, What?... I just didn't think it was real. Someone so young, you're not expecting to hear that they've passed, especially someone that you've just seen. I just went from shock to sadness to anger."
Reflections on Friendship and Shared History
Horan reflected on his long-standing friendship with Payne, noting that whenever he saw any of his former bandmates, it transported him back to their early days meeting as teenagers on The X Factor. He echoed Louis Tomlinson's sentiment that despite time apart, they would "fall back in like it was 10 years ago," emphasizing the enduring bond between the group members.
As Horan confronts these significant health challenges while promoting new music and preparing for his upcoming tour, his candid revelations provide a stark reminder of the physical toll that can accompany a high-profile music career, compounded by personal loss and genetic predisposition.
