Netflix's Little House on the Prairie Reboot Divides Fans Over Nostalgia
Netflix's Little House Reboot Divides Fans

Netflix's reboot of Little House on the Prairie has left fans divided since its release this month. The eight-part series, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved books, follows the Ingalls family as they establish a new home outside the town of Independence in the 1800s.

Plot and New Perspectives

Series one adapts the third book in Wilder's series, depicting the Ingalls family—along with their dog Jack—facing harsh prairie conditions such as fever, wolves, and fire. Creator Rebecca Sonnenshine said: “It’s about people deciding who they want to be and looking for a better life. You always have a chance to reinvent and rediscover who you are.”

This adaptation expands perspectives not explored in previous versions, including encounters with the Osage people who have long called the prairie home. The Ingalls family believed the land was “free,” but the series addresses the complex history of settlement.

Fan Reactions

Reactions on social media have been mixed. On X, @wickedreina617 asked: “As someone who watched the original, who asked for this???” while @sweetsucre added: “What was wrong with the original? That show is classic. Michael Landon was Charles Ingalls and Melissa Gilbert was Laura Ingalls. Y'all are messing with perfection.”

However, other fans are excited. @mburr27 wrote: “That should be fun to watch! I remember watching the show growing up.” @hopingitgetstou added: “THE OG NELLIE SHOWING UP IN THE SHOW IM EMOTIONAL I LOVE LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE.”

Renewal and Future Seasons

The eight-part series has already been renewed for a second season, which will follow the Ingalls family to Walnut Grove, Minnesota, and introduce Nellie Oleson, Laura’s iconic rival, played by Willa Dunn. The original book series, first published in the 1930s, has sold over 73 million copies in more than 100 countries and has been translated into at least 27 languages.
