Michael Wainwright, a 74-year-old pensioner, has been sentenced to eight months in prison and handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order after pleading guilty to performing a sex act in public at Hebden Bridge railway station in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The incident occurred at midday on February 22, when Wainwright masturbated right next to an unsuspecting woman who was pushing a pram on the station platform.
Witness Reports and Arrest
A horrified member of the public spotted Wainwright and immediately flagged down station staff to report the stomach-churning scene. A quick-thinking railway worker attempted to locate the perpetrator using CCTV but, unable to find him on camera, rushed out onto the platform to investigate. There, the worker witnessed the act first-hand. Police were called, and Wainwright was taken into custody.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
At Bradford Crown Court, Wainwright admitted his crime during a police interview, acknowledging it was wrong but offering no explanation for his behavior. He had previously pleaded guilty to exposure at Bradford Magistrates' Court on April 30. Detective Constable David Bentley of British Transport Police (BTP) said: "Wainwright's actions were nothing short of horrific." He added that the pensioner later confessed he could have stopped himself from acting in the vile manner he did but simply chose not to.

BTP confirmed the sentence and urged anyone who witnesses a sexual offence on the railway network to report it immediately by texting 61016. Det Cons Bentley emphasized: "There is absolutely no place on the railway for sexual offending and we're committed to securing justice for victims and ensuring offenders like Wainwright have their day in court." He also stated that no report is too small or too trivial, and the force will always take action.
