A former child star who captured hearts on Channel 4's Educating Yorkshire has reflected on his journey living with a stammer, 13 years after first appearing on the show.
Musharaf Asghar's Early Struggles
Musharaf Asghar, affectionately known as 'Mushy', featured in the debut series of Educating Yorkshire in 2013. The series followed a year in his life and that of another pupil at Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury. Viewers witnessed his transformation from struggling to speak due to a stammer to delivering a speech in front of his classmates at the end of Year 11.
In a memorable moment that has gone viral multiple times, teacher Mr Matthew Burton used a technique from The King's Speech to help the teenager overcome his speech impediment.
Return to School 13 Years Later
Now aged 29, Musharaf returned to his former school as a special guest for the second series of Educating Yorkshire. He delivered a speech in episode five, leaving viewers emotional once again. Reflecting on the experience on his TikTok account, he said: 'It was by far one of the scariest moments of my life.'
'You don't really go into school thinking you're going to deliver a talk in front of your whole class, but me at the age of 16 I was thinking 'why not, let's see how it goes'.' He added: 'Fast forward 13 years later I'm now in my own high school speaking to year 11 kids about to do their GCSEs. If I'm being honest, I was so scared and nervous.'
Nerves and Expectations
Musharaf admitted the pressure was intense: 'I've never done a speech with Matthew (Mr Burton) before, so it was very nerve wracking because there was a sense of expectation that I would absolutely smash it.' He continued: 'Even just walking into that hall and realising I was about to do a speech and be recorded again, you have to come across as a fluent speaker – it was nerve racking. I'm glad I did it and I think it was such a wonderful opportunity.'
Becoming a Motivational Speaker
Since his television debut, Musharaf has become an established motivational speaker, touring the UK to share his experiences and the challenges he has overcome. He also runs a YouTube channel with over 7,000 subscribers and actively engages with followers on social media, discussing significant matters and inspiring thousands.
Fan Reactions
Admirers have praised his journey. One commented: 'You're an absolute inspiration to so many. Thrilled to see you doing well and successful.' Another wrote: 'I cried so much watching that episode. You have come so far and I am genuinely so proud of you.' A third added: 'It was so inspiring to watch. I had tears in my eyes.'
Fans continue to express admiration: 'Even after 13 years I have so much respect for you,' and 'I attended one of your online seminars and found it very inspirational, thank you.'
