Millie Mackintosh Recalls Hugo Taylor's Eleven Fateful Words That 'Scared' Her
Made in Chelsea stars Millie Mackintosh and Hugo Taylor have reportedly called time on their marriage after seven years together, with Millie now bravely opening up about her alcohol struggles and the chilling prediction made by her husband that ultimately prompted her journey to sobriety.
Marriage Under Strain
Millie married Hugo, another former Made in Chelsea star, in July 2018 and the couple have two daughters – Sienna and Aurelia. Recent reports have now emerged suggesting the pair are separating, marking a difficult start to 2026 for the reality television personalities.
In her unflinching memoir Bad Drunk, the reality star has opened up about her struggles with alcohol and the significant impact it had on her marriage. The book provides a raw and honest account of her journey toward sobriety and the personal challenges she faced along the way.
The Wedding Incident That Changed Everything
Millie describes in her book how, six months after giving birth to Aurelia, she and Hugo attended the wedding of one of his oldest friends. She confessed: “I'm uncomfortable at big social occasions such as weddings and they have often been triggers for my bad drunk behaviour.”
This particular high-pressure situation, she added, “was such an epic sh*t show it started the wheels in motion for me to change my ways for good.” Millie recalls that she had made a special effort with her hair and make-up, and promised herself that she was going to limit herself to three drinks at the reception.
However, her good intentions were soon overcome by social anxiety. Three drinks soon became four, and for Millie the evening became “a blur.” She says that she still can’t remember many details of that night, but recalls becoming very emotional, crying, then getting angry – a new behaviour that started during the last couple of years of her drinking.
“I would suddenly become filled with an immense rage,” she explained. “I picked a fight with Hugo and tried to hit him.”
The Humiliating Aftermath
When photos of the event began circulating a day or two later, Millie spotted herself “looking practically possessed” in the background of many of them. She says that it was “humiliating” to have been seen in that state by so many of her husband’s oldest and dearest friends.
She still recalls the fateful warning he gave her after that incident. “He said to me after that wedding, a few days before we got on the boat in the Mediterranean, 'If you don't stop drinking it's going to end our marriage',” Millie explained. “Hugo's words were enough to really scare me, and I promised him in the moment that I'd never drink again.”
The Journey to Sobriety
Of course, Millie adds, the decision to cut boozing out for good can never come from someone else – it has to come from within. She went on: “I think you've really got to want to quit for yourself — not anyone else. As much as you might want to do it for a loved one.”
But eventually, just over two and a half years ago, Millie decided that enough was enough. She hired a sober coach to help her through the first six months without alcohol, and devoured dozens of books about sobriety.
She told Grazia magazine: “I wanted to understand what my life might look like if I stopped and learn the effect alcohol was having on my brain and health. Getting sober was hard at first, it’s not just the action of giving up, you start to realise that you may grow apart from some of your friends and socially your environment will change but for me it was worth it.”
Wellness Transformation
Her only regret about that difficult process, she says, was “not stopping sooner,” and she has since gone on to become a hugely successful wellness and sobriety influencer. Millie has pivoted her career toward promoting healthy living and sharing her experiences with addiction recovery.
Current Relationship Status
Sadly, though, Millie has had a difficult start to 2026. Her social media posts show clear signs of distance between herself and her husband dating back to the Christmas period, suggesting ongoing relationship challenges despite her personal transformation.
A friend told the Daily Mail that over the past few weeks, Millie and Hugo have had serious conversations about their future, and have ultimately decided it’s better for them to part ways. “Their main priority remains their children and family life,” the source said, “and separating is not something they ever hoped would happen.”
“At present, they are considering what living apart might look like and how they plan to navigate co-parenting their young children,” the friend continued. “It’s been an incredibly difficult start to the year, and one they hope to continue managing in private.”
The couple's separation comes despite Millie's successful journey to sobriety, highlighting the complex nature of relationship dynamics even when personal challenges are addressed. Millie's memoir Bad Drunk remains available, offering further insight into her experiences with alcohol addiction and recovery.
