Mike Lynch, the British tech billionaire often called “Britain’s Bill Gates,” died in the 2024 sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off Sicily. A new BBC documentary, Millionaire Superyacht: Why Ships Sink, aired on June 22, 2026, investigating the disaster.
Who Was Mike Lynch?
Lynch earned a PhD from Cambridge University and co-founded software company Autonomy in 1996, pioneering early artificial intelligence. He later co-founded cybersecurity firm Darktrace. At his death, his net worth was estimated between £852 million and £1.1 billion, according to the BBC.
Lynch faced a long legal battle, including extradition to the US on fraud charges. He was cleared of all charges in June 2024, just months before his death.
The Bayesian Tragedy
On August 19, 2024, the Bayesian sank during bad weather off Sicily. Seven of the 22 people aboard died, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who had just won a place at Oxford University. Other vessels in the area remained afloat, but another dive boat, Sea Story, also capsized without warning that year.
Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares survived. The couple married in 2001 after meeting in New York in 2000.
Tributes and Legacy
Friend Andrew Kanter called Lynch “the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known.” Hannah’s sister Esme described her as “endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious.” The documentary is available on BBC iPlayer.
