Micah Richards has revealed that his father Lincoln died just hours before he went on air as a BBC pundit for England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina on July 15, 2026. The 38-year-old former footballer shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, posting a childhood photo with his father and an emotional tribute.
Unexpected Loss Before Broadcast
Richards received the news on Wednesday, June 15, while he was in Atlanta, USA, covering the match for the BBC. Despite the tragedy, he appeared live at Atlanta Stadium alongside Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart to discuss England's 2-1 defeat. He wrote: "Not long before going on air today, I received the awful news that my father Lincoln had passed away. His death was unexpected, and he has left us all too soon."
Tribute to a Hero
In his Instagram post, Richards described his father as his "greatest fan" and "hero." He said: "He barely missed a game my entire life. He would take me wherever I needed to go when I was a kid and he was the proudest parent possible during my professional career. It was so rare for him to not be by my side." He added that his father, a proud Yorkshireman, would have wanted the show to go on.
Outpouring of Support
Fans, footballers, and fellow pundits rushed to support Richards. Former Chelsea captain John Terry wrote: "So sorry @micahrichards. Sending our love and condolences mate at this very difficult time." Chef Gordon Ramsay commented: "Condolences. Micah sending love to you and your family." Carol Vorderman added: "I'm so very sorry to hear this news Micah. But as a proud old Yorkshireman he absolutely would have been so incredibly proud of literally everything you've achieved... Sending best."
