EastEnders has cast comedian and podcaster Amy Matthews in a mystery role that spells trouble for Denise Fox. Matthews, known for writing on Have I Got News for You and appearing in Scot Squad, plays Rita, a blonde woman seen getting close to Jack Branning at the Queen Vic.
Denise's cancer battle takes a devastating turn
Denise Fox (Diane Parish) is facing acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a fast-growing blood cancer. After initially ignoring symptoms, she sought help following Sam Mitchell's bravery with breast cancer. Tests confirmed AML, requiring immediate treatment. Hours after her diagnosis, her grandson Jordan was hit by Ian Beale, leaving daughter Chelsea devastated.
Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) urged Denise to start chemotherapy, but she resisted, straining their relationship. She was discharged this week, but doctors revealed the cancer hadn't responded well, needing more treatment. A fellow patient, Teyana (Denise Pitter), provided comfort but died suddenly, leaving Denise in shock.
Jack turns to a mysterious new woman
Denise also clashed with Gray Atkins' nan, Sheila, and later removed her head wrap in front of Jack, exposing her hair loss. Jack entered unexpectedly, and she angrily ordered him out. Next week, the couple remains distant as Jack is placed on compassionate leave, with newcomer DC Craig Ingram taking his cases.
Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) pushes Jack to reach out to Denise after she shares her grief over Teyana's death. But Jack, choked with emotion, can't reciprocate. Promotional images show Jack at the Vic with Rita, whose hand ends up on his knee.
