Messi Becomes World Cup All-Time Top Scorer with 17th Goal

Lionel Messi has become the all-time leading goal-scorer in World Cup history after netting his 17th goal at the tournament. The Argentina superstar surpassed Germany great Miroslav Klose's tally of 16 goals during a dramatic group stage clash against Austria.

Record-Breaking Goal

Messi had matched Klose's record with a hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina's opening match. Against Austria, he seized the record outright by pouncing on a low delivery cleverly left by Rodrigo de Paul, smashing the ball beyond Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

Earlier in the match, Messi had a chance to claim the record from the penalty spot after a VAR check awarded Argentina an early penalty. However, he blazed his spot-kick wide of the target, delaying the historic moment.

Messi's Comments on the Record

Speaking after his hat-trick against Algeria, Messi downplayed the significance of the record. "Honestly, no [I don't attach importance to the record]. It's an honour to be there because of what it means to be there next to Klose, Ronaldo is there too, but I don't think it means anything," he said. "Mbappe is there, he scored two today. It's a statistic and nothing more. While it's an honour to be able to compete with all of them, it doesn't mean anything to me."

Family Matters

Messi was left in tears after his record-equalling strike last week, and it has emerged that his father, Jorge, is unwell. A statement issued by the Messi family last week read: "He is currently under medical supervision, recovering, and progressing favorably within his current condition."

The statement continued: "Given the versions, rumors, and speculation that have circulated in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep displeasure at the lack of sensitivity, respect, and scruples with which some people have treated a strictly private and family matter."

The family also clarified that only closest relatives have accurate information about Jorge's condition and requested privacy. "A person's health and the peace of mind of those around them should not be subject to speculation or irresponsible media interest," the statement added.

Upcoming Fixtures

Messi and Argentina will wrap up their World Cup group stage fixtures against Jordan. The team aims to build on their strong start as they pursue the title.
