Mel B Reveals Family Move from LA to Leeds After Divorce and Father's Illness
Mel B Moves Family from LA to Leeds After Divorce

British pop icon Mel B has publicly detailed the profound personal reasons behind her family's relocation from Los Angeles to her native northern England in 2019. The Spice Girls star, whose real name is Melanie Brown, made the significant move following her divorce from second husband Stephen Belafonte and during her father's final illness.

A Return Home Amidst Personal Crisis

The 50-year-old singer, affectionately known as Scary Spice, described her marriage to film producer Stephen Belafonte from 2007 to 2017 as "horrible" and characterized by coercive control. Belafonte, with whom Brown shares youngest daughter Madison, now 14, has consistently and strongly denied allegations of abuse throughout their relationship.

Two years after finalizing her divorce, Brown traveled back to the United Kingdom with her three daughters: Phoenix, now 27, Angel, now 18, and Madison. "My father was dying, and I hadn't seen or spoken to him or my mum or anyone for a good part of nine years," Brown revealed in a candid interview with The Times of London. "So I flew to England. My dad was in the hospice at death's door, but thankfully he waited for me before passing away."

Children's Influence on the Permanent Move

When contemplating a return to Los Angeles, Brown recalled her daughter Angel's pivotal question delivered in an American accent: "Mommy, why are we going back to America when all your family's here?" This prompted Brown to discuss relocation with her children, who enthusiastically chose Leeds over London despite weather differences.

Following what she described as a financially devastating divorce, Brown claimed she was left with only £700 to her name. This necessitated moving into her mother's bungalow with her children and dog. "It was perfect, because then I had no choice but to mend the relationships with my mum, my sisters, my friends who didn't know what I'd been going through," she reflected. "So it put our family back together."

New Beginnings in Northern England

Brown now resides in a £2.2 million farmhouse surrounded by 15 acres of forest with her third husband, 37-year-old hairdresser Rory McPhee. The singer first achieved global fame in 1996 as a member of the iconic Spice Girls, alongside Victoria Beckham, Melanie C, Geri Halliwell, and Emma Bunton.

Spice Girls Reunion Speculation Continues

In related developments, bandmate Melanie C recently hinted that the group is closer to a reunion now than they have been in a "very long time." "I'm always keeping my fingers crossed," she stated during an appearance on Heart Breakfast in January. This speculation intensified when Emma Bunton celebrated her 50th birthday with bandmates Melanie C, Beckham, and Halliwell.

The group last reunited in 2019 for a 13-date stadium tour, though without Victoria Beckham's participation. "Looking back to 2019, when we did our stadium tour, Victoria wasn't with us. So she has to have that experience," Melanie C remarked, suggesting potential future collaborations might include all original members.
