Megan Barton-Hanson Reveals Emotional Toll of Backlash Over Past Career
Megan Barton-Hanson, the former Love Island star, has candidly shared how the intense backlash against her stripping past and OnlyFans career left her feeling profoundly "unworthy" of ever getting married or starting a family. The 31-year-old, who reportedly earns an astonishing £800,000 per month from the platform, described internalising the negative narratives others projected onto her.
Defensive Mechanisms and Public Perception
Speaking on Fearne Cotton's Happy Place podcast, Megan recalled how she adopted a defensive stance to shield herself from criticism. "Because I had that past in sex work, because I had been that party girl, it’s like: 'Oh my god, imagine if that was your wife. No one’s ever gonna wanna marry you, you’re gonna be such a terrible mum,'" she explained. In response, she would publicly claim to never want to settle down, stating, "I’d be like: 'no' and do that whole defensive thing."
However, with time and maturity, Megan has come to acknowledge that this was not her true sentiment. She admitted, "I do want to settle down and have a husband one day, but for ages like: 'If you think I am not worthy of being a mum.'" She elaborated on how she conformed to the negative narrative, saying, "'Because of my past I'm going to go with that narrative: 'I don't want it anyway, I'm going to party hang out with my gay friends until I'm sixty f**k you,' but that's not actually how I feel in my heart."
Recent Safety Concerns and Personal Struggles
This revelation follows a distressing incident where Megan felt "unsafe" after being followed by two men in a black Mercedes Estate. She took to Instagram to warn others, writing, "Safety alert Benfleet/Hadleigh/Rayleigh – women and dog walkers stay alert. I was followed by a black Mercedes Estate by two men inside. They stopped next to me multiple times. Looped the area then returned again trying to wave me over." She expressed fears for her and her dog's safety, urging followers to trust their instincts.
Motivations Behind Cosmetic Procedures
Megan also opened up about her motivations for undergoing cosmetic surgery, linking it to financial aspirations and past bullying. On the We Need To Talk podcast with dating expert Paul Carrick Brunson, she admitted, "I'll be brutally honest - money." Despite being body-confident with her natural appearance, she was inspired by a social media influencer making significant earnings. "I remember saying to my first boyfriend, 'babe, she's making so much money, don't you think I'm prettier, I could definitely do that if I had bigger t**s,'" she shared.
Bullying in school over her nose and ears further drove her decisions. "I wanted my nose done, that was another thing from school kids would pick on," Megan said. She viewed surgery as a pathway to financial stability, especially while struggling with minimum wage jobs. "I was working in London and it was minimum wage, barely affording my train ticket to commute from Essex to London. I was like, this can't be what life is, surely," she reflected, aspiring to become a glamour model or Page 3 girl.
Megan's journey highlights the complex interplay between public scrutiny, personal identity, and the pursuit of success in the digital age.
