Film festival premieres are typically highly polished events where Hollywood A-listers showcase the latest designer clothes and jewellery in a blaze of glamour. However, Scottish star Karen Gillan has revealed a strikingly different reality from her recent experience, involving a sick baby and an impromptu costume change at 30,000 feet.
A Mother's Improvised Solution
The Inverness-born actress, 38, was flying to last week's premiere of Over Your Dead Body—a film she co-produced—in Austin, Texas, when her infant daughter, Clementine, born in 2024, suddenly threw up on them both mid-flight. With no spare clothes for her baby, Gillan faced a dilemma. 'I had no change of clothes for her,' she admitted, forcing her to think creatively under pressure.
From Premiere Top to Baby Outfit
In a moment of maternal ingenuity, the former companion to Matt Smith's Doctor Who used the elegant top she had planned to wear the following night at the glittering premiere as improvised baby clothes. Clementine ended up 'absolutely fine' and even stylish in the makeshift outfit, while Ms Gillan 'wore vomit all the way to Austin,' embracing the less glamorous side of motherhood.
Reflecting on the incident, the actress, known for her roles in the Jumanji and Guardian of the Galaxy films, offered solidarity to other parents: 'To all the mothers wearing vomit today, my thoughts are with you.' This candid revelation highlights the often-unseen challenges of balancing a high-profile career with family life.
Whisky Muse and Artistic Collaboration
In a contrasting note of glamour, last month, Karen Gillan was unveiled as the face of a historic Scotch whisky celebrating women. She serves as the Muse for artist Emma Hack, renowned for her work on one of the most viewed music videos of all time—Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know. Hack was invited to create a label for a limited edition of the whisky Hedonism, produced by Compass Box, which has collaborated with various female artists, with Gillan being the latest addition.
A Personal Honour
The 38-year-old actress expressed her pride in the role: 'To be considered a muse for this whisky and to be a part of its story is deeply personal to me. Sharing whisky and stories are some of the best times of my life.' She added with a touch of humour, 'There's no wilder sensation than seeing yourself on a whisky bottle.' Hedonism, first released in 2000, holds the distinction of being the world's first blended grain Scotch whisky, adding a layer of prestige to her involvement.
This dual narrative—from a vomit-stained flight to a prestigious whisky collaboration—showcases Karen Gillan's multifaceted life, blending the raw realities of motherhood with the glittering opportunities of her acting career. Her story resonates with many, offering a relatable glimpse into the juggling act faced by working parents everywhere.
