Margot Robbie has candidly discussed her refusal to perform what she described as an "impossible" X-rated scene during the filming of Martin Scorsese's acclaimed financial drama, The Wolf of Wall Street. The Australian actress, who rose to international fame portraying Naomi Lapaglia opposite Leonardo DiCaprio's Jordan Belfort, revealed specific details about a scene that was ultimately cut from the final script.
The Scene That Was Deemed Unfilmable
Robbie explained that in the original screenplay, her character was supposed to perform a particularly challenging physical manoeuvre involving her stiletto heel and underwear. "I remember thinking when I read it, 'That's just impossible'. I was like, 'No, I'm right, that is absolutely impossible'," the actress recalled of the moment she encountered the scene description. This led to her outright refusal to attempt the sequence, which was subsequently removed from the shooting schedule.
The Famous Nursery Scene That Made the Cut
While that particular moment was excised, another provocative nursery scene did make it into the final film. This sequence features Naomi seducing Jordan in their child's nursery, famously involving her stiletto heel making contact with his face. The scene became so iconic that Dr Nadine Macaluso, the real-life inspiration for Robbie's character, later addressed its authenticity.
"No way! I am not that sexy," Macaluso quipped when asked about the scene's realism. "I wish I was, but I think that was my ex-husband's fantasy of what he wanted me to be like. Secondly, there were cameras in the room, but I did not perform that sexual seductive act towards him."
The Gruelling Reality Behind the Glamour
Robbie provided fascinating insights into the challenging conditions actors face during intimate scene filming. She described shooting the famous seduction sequence in "a tiny bedroom with 30 crew crammed in. All men. And for 17 hours I'm pretending to be touching myself."
The actress explained the psychological approach required: "It's just a very weird thing and you have to bury the embarrassment and absurdity, really deep, and fully commit."
Physical Toll and Unpleasant Surprises
The filming challenges extended beyond psychological discomfort to physical injury. Robbie revealed she sustained numerous paper cuts during another memorable scene where her character has sex atop a pile of counterfeit banknotes.
"If anyone is ever planning on having sex on top of a pile of cash: don't," she advised wryly, noting that the aftermath left her back looking like she had been "whipped a million times."
Creative Choices and Character Integrity
Despite refusing the "impossible" scene and enduring physical discomfort, Robbie made deliberate choices about her portrayal. She revealed she was offered the option to avoid full nudity in certain scenes but declined, explaining: "The whole point is that she's going to come out completely naked - that's the card she's playing right now."
This commitment to character authenticity, combined with her willingness to set boundaries around what she considered unfilmable, demonstrates the complex balance actors must strike between artistic dedication and personal limits during challenging productions.
