Margaret Qualley has revealed she attempted to play matchmaker for her mother, Andie MacDowell, and actor Bill Murray. The revelation came during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, where Qualley was playing a game of “True or False.”
Qualley read the prompt: “I once tried to set up Bill Murray with my mom.” Although Fallon guessed the story was false, Qualley confirmed it was true. She explained that she saw Murray shortly before coming on the show, noting that he appeared in her backstage dressing room wearing a Piggly Wiggly shirt.
Murray and MacDowell starred together in the 1993 film Groundhog Day and both now live in Charleston, South Carolina. Qualley recalled Murray telling her that he and MacDowell did not get along during filming, citing her long hair appointments and a missed line. Qualley responded that she had heard a different story.
Seeing an opportunity, Qualley thought the timing was perfect for both to be single and living in the same city. “They've got this kind of rage towards each other, but maybe he's trying to make amends,” she said, adding that she gave Murray her mother’s phone number. “And you know, if he’s got any sense at all, he’d be the luckiest guy in the world,” she continued.
Murray previously spoke about his experience with MacDowell on Groundhog Day in a 2021 interview with Collider, admitting he owed her an apology. “She drove me absolutely nuts. We were always waiting for Andie MacDowell’s hair,” he said. “I must have really resented the fact that she still hadn’t fallen in love with me.”
