Home renovations can throw up all kinds of surprises, but one man's discovery of a retro crisp packet has captured attention online. Donnie Maclean was renovating his kitchen when he found a sealed Golden Wonder crispy bacon flavour crisp packet dating back more than 40 years hidden behind a kitchen unit.
The Vintage Discovery
Donnie took to X, formerly Twitter, to share photographs of his remarkable find. The packet, which remained completely sealed, featured transparent windows on both sides, allowing the crisps to be seen still intact inside. The front of the 25g packet displayed the Golden Wonder logo with 'potato crisps' above a see-through window and 'crispy bacon flavour' below. The reverse side included an ingredients list, a message urging to 'keep your country tidy', and contact details for Golden Wonder. A series of numbers stamped on the back suggested the packet was manufactured in 1986.
Social Media Reactions
Donnie wrote: 'Hey @GoldenWonderUK. I'm renovating the house I bought recently. I just pulled a kitchen unit away from the wall and found these beauties! I'm estimating late 1970s. What do you reckon?!' Another X user posted a photograph of packets from 1980 to 1996, noting that Donnie's find matched one from around 1983. Other users reacted with humour, with one saying: '100 per cent you open them a genie will come out!' Another commented on the full packet: 'Wow. Remember when they weren't selling bags of air with a couple crisps in the bottom.'
Golden Wonder's History
Golden Wonder has been a British snack staple for nearly 80 years, founded in Stockbridge near Edinburgh in 1947. The company formerly produced Wotsits, Wheat Crunchies, and Nik Naks. After entering administration in 2006, it was purchased by Northern Irish crisp manufacturer Tayto.
