Lola Young has shared the heartbreaking moment she discovered an older man she had been dating for months was leading a double life as a married father. The 25-year-old singer declared she is now 'back to women' after overhearing the man speaking to his wife moments after they had been intimate.
The Deception Unfolds
Lola revealed the story during a segment of Spanish pop star Rosalia's concert at London's O2 Arena on Tuesday. She explained that she had been seeing the man for four months and was falling in love with him. The shocking truth came to light when, after they had slept together, his phone rang and he answered, still connected to the Bluetooth speaker. Lola heard his wife asking him to bring back nappies for their children.
'I was seeing someone for about four months, it was getting pretty serious,' Lola said. 'I have to confess I thought I was falling in love. He was a bit older, like an older human being. Men seem to mature a lot less quickly.'
She recounted the moment: 'We were seeing each other for four months and we got in bed and we do the deed, it was great. His phone rings just as he's about to finish and he jumps up and he's like, "I'll be back in two minutes." During the intercourse, the music was still playing on the Bluetooth speaker. He goes downstairs so he's on the phone and his wife is asking him to bring back nappies for his kids. I hear it all on the Bluetooth speaker.'
Lola expressed her shock but maintained her innocence: 'I didn't do anything wrong. I lost the plot a bit. I was like, I can't do this, I'm back to women.'
Personal Struggles and Recovery
Lola, known for her hit 'Messy', has been open about her personal battles. She recently took a break from the limelight after collapsing on stage in September. In March, she revealed she has been in 'drugs recovery' and is doing much better after seeking treatment. Speaking to The Sunday Times, she said: 'I think I would rather for the sake of my privacy not say too much. But what I would say is that recovery is an ongoing process. I'm not the finished article, but I'm doing a hell of a lot better.'
She later disclosed that she checked into a holistic facility focusing on addiction and mental health and now attends AA meetings. Lola also shared that she faced similar demons while recording her album 'I'm Only F**king Myself' in 2024, dealing with mental health issues and addiction battles.
Her song lyrics have referenced her struggle with cocaine addiction, describing herself as 'a dumb little addict trying to quit the snowflake.' Despite criticism for canceling concerts to focus on recovery, she told Rolling Stone: 'There was a bunch of hate, but you know what? F**k it. Going away was a decision that I had to make. What else was I going to do? Die? That was the reality of where my addiction was heading.'
She added: 'I chose to hurt myself and self-sabotage, and I also chose to get onstage and perform.' However, she is grateful for the traumatic incident as it was a turning point that allowed her to recover and have a better future.
Support from Fellow Stars
Lola received overwhelming support from celebrities including Katy Perry, Elton John, and Lady Gaga. Earlier this year, she was nominated for five Brit Awards and won her first Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance for 'Messy'. She celebrated without alcohol, drinking an energy drink at the Universal bash with Shania Twain.
Mental Health Diagnosis
In 2022, Lola revealed she was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at age 17. She described the diagnosis as affecting her entire life and outlook, but emphasized that her condition does not define her. 'It is my superpower,' she said. Schizoaffective disorder combines symptoms of schizophrenia (like hallucinations) and mood disorders (like depression or mania). Lola believes cannabis use to manage childhood trauma may have triggered the condition. She manages manic episodes with medication but admits touring is difficult due to unpredictability, sometimes experiencing month-long episodes with no sleep.
Lola has been sectioned in the past and feels guilt and shame after being unwell in front of others, but continues to be open about her journey.
