Kristin Davis has shared a hilariously awkward behind-the-scenes secret from her time filming the iconic series Sex and the City, revealing that one intimate scene was almost unbearable due to a co-star's excessively minty breath.
An Overpowering Minty Mishap
The actor, now 60, who played the beloved Charlotte York, recounted the uncomfortable memory on a recent episode of her rewatch podcast, Are You a Charlotte?. While she refrained from naming the actor in question, Davis was candid about the experience.
"I don't remember if this guy OD'd on mints," Davis began, "because all I remember was just really being like, 'Get me out of here, please.'" She apologised for the unprofessional comment but insisted it was the truth of the moment.
The situation was compounded by the fact that Davis was never a fan of the storyline in the first place. "Especially, and I still remember it, because I never liked the storyline, and then everyone liked it but me," she explained. "It was just one of those awkward things."
Recalling the 'Widower' Episode
Davis went on to clarify that the problematic scene was part of a longer plot in the second season's fifth episode, titled "Four Women and a Funeral." In it, Charlotte meets a widower named Ned, played by actor Kurt Deutsch, at a cemetery. The pair later hook up, before Charlotte discovers he was faking his grief.
She was quick to note that her discomfort was not with Deutsch's performance, but with the specific scene and the circumstances around filming it. "I just didn't love that one sex scene," Davis said. "And I think I had to come in at, like, 11 p.m. to film it also. So I was cranky about that."
Davis also reflected on the unusual dynamic of these early 'boyfriend-of-the-week' roles, where male actors would arrive on set and immediately film intimate scenes. "A guy would just show up on set, and you're just in bed with them," she said, noting that both parties were often thrown off by the process.
Other Storylines Davis Disliked
This is not the first time the actor has expressed dissatisfaction with certain Sex and the City plots. On a March episode of her podcast, she criticised the infamous food poisoning storyline involving Charlotte and her on-screen husband, Harry, played by Evan Handler.
"I just hated that storyline so much," Davis stated, recalling scenes where they had to lie on a bathroom floor in stained t-shirts. She believed it was based on a real story about someone falling ill from rich French cheeses.
Davis, who reprised her role as Charlotte in two film spinoffs and the recent HBO Max reboot And Just Like That, continues to engage fans with these candid revelations, offering a new perspective on the making of a television classic.
