Ken Bruce Slams BBC for Ruining Shows by Targeting Younger Audiences
Ken Bruce Slams BBC for Ruining Shows

Ken Bruce, the veteran broadcaster who left BBC Radio 2 in 2023 after 31 years, has criticised the corporation for its ongoing efforts to appeal to younger listeners, warning that such changes can ruin successful programmes.

Bruce's Criticism of BBC Strategy

In an interview with The Telegraph, the 75-year-old said he remains proud of his time at the BBC but highlighted a recurring mistake: tampering with shows that already work. "You see it at the BBC all the time. They have a successful show, and they say, 'Let's get (younger),'" he said.

Bruce now hosts a mid-morning show on Greatest Hits Radio, where he feels the approach is different. "I think what we do is we know who we're talking to, we know what they want to hear, and we deliver that," he explained.

A Question of Sport as a Cautionary Tale

Bruce pointed to the long-running sports quiz A Question of Sport as an example of the BBC's missteps. "That was a great show, and now I don't think it exists anymore, because they tried to renew it to appeal to younger viewers, and they weren't there," he said. The programme was cancelled in 2023 after more than a century on air, with the BBC citing inflation and funding pressures.

Radio 1 Presenter Shake-Up

Bruce's comments come as the BBC sacks six well-known presenters from Radio 1, including Rickie Haywood-Williams, Melvin Odoom, Dean McCullough, Nat O'Leary, James Cusack, and Swarzy. The station announced the changes on Instagram, stating: "We thank them for their passion, creativity and dedication and wish them all the very best for whatever comes next."

New talent includes YouTube and I'm A Celebrity star GK Barry, alongside Charley Marlow, Mylo & Rosie, and Emil Franchi. Additional changes involve Charlie Hedges and Jeremiah Asiamah hosting Radio 1's Live Lounge, Lauren Layfield fronting The Official Chart: First Look from Birmingham, and Shanequa Paris and Oré Olukoga taking over Life Hacks. Sian Eleri's The Chillest Show moves to 9pm, while Alyx Holcombe's Indie Show shifts to Tuesday nights at 11pm.
