In a deeply emotional segment on Monday's episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos announced the passing of Consuelos' father, Saul. The couple opened up about their loss, sharing heartfelt memories and reflections on Saul's life and impact.
A Peaceful Passing After Long Illness
Mark Consuelos revealed that his father "passed away peacefully" after battling a long illness. The announcement came during the show's regular broadcast, with both hosts visibly affected by the recent loss.
Ripa's Emotional Tribute
Kelly Ripa became emotional while discussing her father-in-law, whom she described as "the greatest person I've ever known." She admitted the loss had profoundly affected their entire family.
"I can honestly say I will miss him every day for the rest of my life, as I know you will, as our children will," Ripa told her husband and the audience.
Family's First Major Loss
The couple's three children—Michael Consuelos, 28, Lola Consuelos, 24, and Joaquin Consuelos, 23—are particularly struggling with their grandfather's passing. Ripa noted this marks "the first loss they've ever experienced in their lives."
She also shared that Saul often served as a babysitter for the children when they were younger, while she and Consuelos were working, creating cherished family memories.
Consuelos Reflects on Father's Legacy
Mark Consuelos reflected on his father's influence, recalling old jokes and valuable life lessons. "There were a lot of lectures, a lot of lectures and I learned so much," he said.
He remembered how his father would make him watch and participate when fixing things around the house. "I didn't know at the time why he was doing that. But now at the house, I'm able to do at least half of the stuff that he did. I learned the most by just watching him."
Immigrant Journey and Service
Consuelos opened up about his father's remarkable journey from Mexico to America, describing Saul as someone who "loved this country so much."
"He came here from Mexico in his early teens, he immigrated here from Mexico. He served his country for 30 years," Consuelos shared. "He ended up at Special Operations Command in Tampa. This young kid from Mexico just got his education from the navy. Was always going to school. Was brilliant. Got his Masters while I was a kid."
With evident pride, Consuelos added, "If you're going to put a face to an immigrant, he would be the prime example of what this country promises people."
Final Words of Gratitude
Wiping away tears, Ripa turned to her husband and said, "You're the strongest person I know. You continually inspire me every day."
She continued with a touching tribute: "All of the good things that I love about you, I loved those same things about your dad. So I just want to say thank you, dad, for everything you gave to us. Everything."
The segment provided a rare, intimate glimpse into the personal lives of the television hosts, showcasing their family's grief and the enduring legacy of Saul Consuelos as a father, grandfather, and immigrant success story.
