The Princess of Wales made a surprise appearance in the latest installment of the 'Overheard at Wimbledon' series, where she was overheard chatting to former British number one Tim Henman and All England Club chair Debbie Jevans. The segment, filmed during her visit to the Championships last week, captured Kate discussing her gruelling Three Peaks Challenge and the overwhelming support for her fundraising efforts.
Kate's Three Peaks Challenge
In the clip, Henman asked about her preparation for the challenge, which involved climbing the highest peaks in Scotland, England, and Wales within 24 hours. Kate replied: 'I did it in 24 hours - that was the challenge anyway. But I think part of the journey was trying to enjoy the process, enjoy the training beforehand, but also making time during the walk to meet people and enjoy the journey, rather than just quickly getting to the top.' She described the weather as 'atrocious', adding: 'Everybody got soaked through, but it was sort of a stoically British thing to do. You know, you’re soaking wet and everybody is saying “come on, we can do it”.'
Donations for Royal Marsden
Kate, who undertook the challenge for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, expressed her gratitude: 'I’ve just been blown away by all of the donations. Everyone has been so generous and that’s what keeps you going, knowing you’re doing it for a good cause; it keeps you going through the hard times.'
Tennis Banter with Henman
The conversation also touched on tennis, with Kate recalling watching Pete Sampras in the late 1990s and early 2000s, prompting Henman to joke about his defeats to the American star. As they watched Brit Arthur Fery defeat Otto Virtanen on Court 18, Kate remarked: 'Oh, lovely shot. But he got there! Lovely. That is seriously good tennis, lovely.'
The princess, who is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, also greeted fans who had queued since 4am for tickets, and helped stewards hand out entry passes to lucky attendees.
