Karol G Reveals ICE Criticism Could Cost Her US Visa
Colombian pop sensation Karol G has disclosed that she faces explicit warnings against condemning the operations of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with advisors cautioning that such outspokenness could jeopardise her visa status. The 35-year-old artist, poised to make history this weekend as the first Latina headliner at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, expressed a deep desire to challenge the agency's actions but acknowledged the significant personal risk involved.
"People Will Say, 'It's Better You Don't'"
In a revealing new cover story for Playboy, the singer-songwriter, born Carolina Giraldo Navarro, explained the precarious position she occupies. "People will say, 'It's better you don't,'" Karol G stated, outlining the stark reality. "Why? Because if you say the thing, maybe the next day you'll get a call: 'Hey, we are taking your visa away.'" She elaborated that this dynamic transforms her into "bait, because some people want to show their power."
The artist, known for hits like "Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido", admitted that uttering the popular activist phrase "ICE Out" would provoke a severe reaction from her management team. "My team would kill me," she conceded. However, Karol G emphasised her willingness to cross that line, framing it as a moral imperative. "But I'm willing to say it," she asserted. "If I'm being honest with you, it's something that crosses the line of what I have to do to protect myself. But at the end of the day, what is my role if I'm in this position?"
A Strategic Approach to Advocacy
Pondering the weight of her platform, Karol G insisted that any statement must be substantive and impactful. "I don't want to just say 'ICE Out' and have nothing come from it," she explained. "I'm probably going to go a little harder than that. I just want to represent my community." She clarified her intent is not to avoid action but to ensure it carries profound meaning. "What I'm saying is that I would do it and will do it with my soul. But I want to sit down and understand, in my head: Here's what that meant."
Acknowledging the immense reach of her stage, Karol G outlined a cautious, strategic approach. "I have a huge stage," she noted, "that's why I want to wait, and if someone were ever to do something to me, I want to stand firmly on my stage for my community." This necessitates patience and precision. "So that's why I may have to be more careful, and wait for my turn, and ensure that, through that opportunity, I can talk and represent something more."
Historic Coachella Performance Amidst Rising Stardom
Karol G's disclosure comes as she prepares for a landmark cultural moment. She is scheduled to close out both Sundays of the three-day Coachella festival, performing on April 12 and April 19 in Indio, California. This historic booking sees her headline alongside Sabrina Carpenter on Fridays and Justin Bieber on Saturdays.
The artist's trajectory to this pinnacle has been marked by consistent chart success. She achieved widespread recognition in 2017 through her collaboration with Bad Bunny on "Ahora Me Llama", solidified her status with the 2018 hit "Secreto", and reached global fame with the 2019 chart-topper "Tusa", featuring Nicki Minaj. Her upcoming Coachella headline sets not only a personal milestone but a significant precedent for Latina artists in the mainstream music industry.
