James Van Der Beek's Family Receives Over $1.2 Million in GoFundMe Support

The family of actor James Van Der Beek is being supported by substantial GoFundMe donations following his death at age 48. The Dawson's Creek star passed away on Wednesday after a two-year battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer, leaving behind his wife Kimberly and their six children: Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, nine, Gwendolyn, seven, and Jeremiah, four.

Financial Turmoil During Cancer Treatment

Kimberly Van Der Beek revealed that friends established the GoFundMe page to raise funds for the late actor's children. In just seven hours, fans and friends contributed over $1.2 million. James had openly discussed his family's financial difficulties on social media during his treatment, explaining how extensive medical bills and living costs left him unable to work and provide for his wife and children.

The actor's gruelling treatment necessitated a move from the family's remote Texas ranch, purchased in 2020 after years in Los Angeles, to an apartment closer to the hospital. This relocation added to their financial strain.

Memorabilia Sales to Cover Expenses

In December, James was forced to sell memorabilia from Dawson's Creek to help cover costs. The auction raised $47,000, with notable items including:

  • The necklace his character Dawson Leery gifted to Joey (played by Katie Holmes), which sold for $26,628
  • A collection of decorations from Dawson's bedroom, including an Indiana Jones model kit and an ET doll, fetching $5,991
  • A chairback that went for $2,663

"I've been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them," Van Der Beek told People magazine. "And with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it's clear that the time is now." He acknowledged feeling nostalgic but expressed satisfaction in sharing the items with long-time supporters.

Support from Co-Stars and Fellow Actors

A year prior, the actor sold merchandise from his film Varsity Blues to assist with his cancer treatments and those of other patients. In September, his Dawson's Creek co-stars rallied around him, organising a charity event. Michelle Williams, alongside Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson, reunited the cast for a read-through of the show's pilot episode to raise funds for James' treatment and the nonprofit F Cancer.

James was scheduled to attend but withdrew due to ill health. Additionally, in January, Cobra Kai actor Paul Walter Hauser announced plans to raise funds for Van Der Beek's medical bills, auctioning personal items and autographs from celebrity friends including Josh Gad, Becky Lynch, and Jimmy Kimmel.

Career Highlights and Final Role

James Van Der Beek shot to fame in the 1990s as teen heartthrob Dawson Leery on Dawson's Creek at age 20. The WB Network drama ran for six seasons from 1998 to 2003, launching the careers of Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson.

Despite his illness, James managed to film one final role during treatment. He appeared in a supporting part as Dean Wilson, a mayoral candidate and school district superintendent, in Elle, a prequel to the Legally Blonde franchise starring Reese Witherspoon. Produced by Witherspoon and featuring Lexi Minetree as a young Elle Woods, the series is set to premiere on Prime Video on July 1, 2026, with scenes shot in May 2025.
