James Martin's Yorkshire Longing: Chef May Leave Home

James Martin's Deep-Rooted Yorkshire Connection

Celebrity chef James Martin has openly discussed his profound love for Yorkshire, admitting he feels compelled to eventually return to his home county where he was raised on a farm. The 53-year-old culinary star, who grew up on a 100-acre farm on the Castle Howard estate, treasures his regular trips back to his roots, insisting he would be "lynched" if he failed to maintain this connection.

A Life Split Between Multiple Locations

James currently divides his time between several locations, including the Cotswolds, Manchester, and Hampshire, where he operates his three restaurants. His primary residence is in Hampshire, which serves as the filming location for his hit ITV programme, James Martin's Saturday Morning. The show is recorded in a kitchen purpose-built specifically for the programme within his property.

His seven-bedroom Hampshire home spans 1.5 acres and features an outdoor kitchen, a greenhouse, and a converted garage that doubles as a filming venue for segments of his ITV show. The custom-designed outdoor cooking area includes a premium wood-fired pizza oven, a substantial central island, and chic green industrial lighting that provides an ideal backdrop for culinary creations. The property is conveniently located near The Kitchen at Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa in New Milton, one of his restaurants.

Yorkshire's Enduring Influence

Despite living in the South East, James' devotion to Yorkshire remains unwavering. He told viewers he plans to return to what he affectionately calls 'God's County' during the summer break of his weekend show. Reflecting on his early years in an interview with Food and Travel, James shared: "I had an amazing childhood. We farmed 100 acres, so we learned the value of graft, but also about food."

He elaborated on the lessons learned from his farming background: "It's an amazing lesson in life to learn at that age: to respect the people who produce food, that it's not just a given – people have to grow it, make it, produce it – and it also gives you a respect doing that as a career. I didn't enjoy school, I hated it, but I loved home life. I was always outdoorsy, mending fences, fixing tractors."

James revealed that the farm faced early challenges as his father "wasn't a farmer by trade," coming from a catering background instead. Despite this, the family persevered, eventually introducing chickens and pigs to the farm. Yorkshire ingredients have remained central to James' culinary philosophy throughout his career – he even presented a food programme exploring the county – but he emphasizes that it's the region's people that continually draw him back.

The Pull of Yorkshire's People and Landscape

He humorously contrasts social interactions, noting that in London, people "think you're going to mug them" if you attempt conversation, while in Yorkshire, residents are "honest and much friendlier." James harbors tremendous affection for Yorkshire's residents, alongside its breathtaking coastline, the Moors, and the woodlands, describing the region as "magical" and "diverse."

Despite his deep love for Yorkshire, practical considerations keep James based in Hampshire. His professional commitments are widely dispersed, creating logistical challenges. However, he has developed a "routine" with his current situation, explaining: "I know where I'm going on which day, every week, and the travelling isn't too bad."

When questioned about potentially returning to his homeland permanently, James remarked: "I'll get lynched if I don't end up in Yorkshire. I love Yorkshire." His statement underscores the powerful emotional pull of his roots, suggesting that while Hampshire serves his current professional needs, Yorkshire remains his true home.
