Tiger Woods Detained for Eight Hours Following High-Speed Rollover Crash in Florida
Golfing icon Tiger Woods was incarcerated for a minimum of eight hours after being involved in a serious two-vehicle rollover collision near his Jupiter, Florida residence. The incident, which occurred on Friday afternoon, led to his arrest on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and refusal to submit to a lawful urine test.
Details of the Collision and Immediate Aftermath
At approximately 2pm ET, Woods was driving northbound on a two-lane road when a pickup truck towing a pressure cleaner trailer attempted to slow down and turn into a driveway. According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, Woods, who was operating a Range Rover, was travelling at an excessive speed, which prevented the pickup truck driver from fully clearing the roadway.
In a last-second manoeuvre to pass, the 15-time major champion collided with the trailer, causing his vehicle to flip onto its side. First responders arrived promptly at the scene, where DUI investigators noted that Woods appeared impaired and lethargic.
Arrest and Charges Filed Against the Golf Legend
Woods was immediately taken into custody and transported to the Martin County Sheriff's Office. There, he faced processing on two misdemeanour charges before his official mugshot was released. Sheriff Budensiek explained during a press conference that Florida state statute mandates an eight-hour incarceration period following a DUI arrest.
"There is a Florida state statute that requires us to keep people incarcerated for at least eight hours post a DUI arrest," Budensiek stated. "So he's in our jail. He will be there for at least eight hours from 3 o'clock, and then he'll be released on bond if he posts bond."
Impairment Suspected from Medication, Not Alcohol
Authorities disclosed that they suspected Woods' impaired state was due to medication rather than alcohol consumption. "At the Martin County Jail, and even on scene, we really weren't suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case," Budensiek revealed. "And that proved to be true at the jail. So Mr Woods did a breathalyser test, blew triple zeros."
However, when requested to provide a urinalysis test, Woods refused, leading to the additional charge of refusal to submit. "He's been charged with DUI, with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test," Budensiek added.
Safety Measures Taken During Incarceration
To ensure his safety, Woods was not placed in general population with other inmates during his time behind bars. Sheriff Budensiek emphasised that while the law applies equally to all, precautions were necessary due to Woods' high-profile status.
"Let me go back to the simplicity of this: We're the sheriff's office. We know we arrested a high-profile figure," he said. "I'm not trying to dramatise, but it doesn't matter who you are. If you break the law, we're going to follow the law. That's a really easy path to take. Now, as far as being in the jail, we're going to make sure he's safe. We're not going to put him in general population."
He further clarified, "He's not going to be with other inmates that could hurt him or try to capitalise on what he did. He'll pay the price, but he's not going to pay the price by getting punished in jail."
Release and Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Woods was photographed leaving Martin County Jail at around 11pm ET on Friday night after being released on bond. The golf legend, who has faced numerous injuries and surgeries in recent years, explained these conditions to investigators during roadside tests, which were taken into account during the assessment.
As the case progresses, Woods will likely face further legal proceedings related to the DUI and refusal charges. This incident marks another challenging chapter for the athlete, whose career has been marred by previous personal and professional setbacks.
