Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry has delivered a powerful statement against ageism in the entertainment industry, declaring she is 'not going to allow myself to be erased'. The 59-year-old star opened up about the challenges of getting older while discussing her forthcoming role in the film Crime 101.
A Defiant Stand Against Marginalisation
In a candid interview with The Cut, Berry reflected on the pervasive sense of devaluation that many women experience as they age. 'You get to this age where you feel like you're being marginalised, devalued. You feel it at work. You feel it from society,' she revealed, connecting these feelings to her character Sharon Coombs.
However, the actress has adopted a resolutely defiant stance. 'But I have adamantly decided I am not going to allow myself to be erased. That's why I'm on my menopause mission. I'm going to be louder than I have ever been,' she proclaimed.
Championing Women's Health and Longevity
This mission is deeply personal and public. In 2020, Berry launched Raspin, a platform initially focused on redefining conversations around menopause and perimenopause. The venture has since been rebranded to target women's health and longevity more directly, forming the cornerstone of what she calls her 'formidable cause for my second act'.
Berry is determined to tackle specific, often stigmatised symptoms head-on. 'Look, it happens to more than 60 percent of women as we get older. Everything gets dry! If we talk about it and laugh about it, there's no more shame or embarrassment,' she said, referring to issues like vaginal dryness.
From Personal Diagnosis to Public Advocacy
The actress's advocacy stems from a jarring personal experience. She discovered she was menopausal 'in the most horrific way', having been misdiagnosed. 'I was diagnosed with herpes instead of a menopausal symptom... and that got me awakened to the idea that if I had this little information, I wonder what millions of other women don't have,' she explained.
This realisation sparked a commitment to destigmatisation through open conversation. 'Only we, women, can destigmatize this by talking about it, making it okay, talking about it with our husbands, our partners, our sons, our co-workers,' Berry asserted. Her advocacy has even taken her to Capitol Hill, where she delivered a speech in May calling for legislation to fund better research and education.
Embracing Age with Confidence and Humour
Berry continues to embrace her age with characteristic confidence and humour. She previously sent fans into a frenzy on her 59th birthday, posting a bikini photo from Bora Bora that showcased her toned physique. The image, featuring a gold sparkly bikini set, prompted widespread admiration on social media.
One X user remarked, 'The older the Berry [the] sweeter the juice,' while another asked, 'Where can I sell my soul to look like this at 59?' The actress has also used wit to normalise conversations, famously telling Gayle King on CBS Mornings that regarding menopause symptoms, 'It did mean that for a minute. Now I'm juicy like the peach!'
Through her platform, her acting choices, and her unfiltered public discourse, Halle Berry is redefining what it means to be a woman in her later decades, both in Hollywood and beyond, refusing silence and invisibility at every turn.
