Gorka Marquez has had a change of heart about marrying Gemma Atkinson, nine years after they made their relationship official. The couple, who met on Strictly Come Dancing, have often spoken about their big day after getting engaged in 2021, but Gorka previously admitted he didn't want to get married. However, after attending the wedding of his friend and fellow dancer Arduino Bertoncello, Gorka now says he does want to tie the knot.
A Change of Heart
During an episode of their podcast, Lost in Translation, Gemma mentioned Gorka attending Arduino's wedding. Gorka said: "When I was sat in there and they were walking in and doing the readings and everything, I just thought, 'Actually, I do want to get married!'" Gemma quipped: "Oh thanks! After nine years..."
Gorka explained that the wedding was a big affair, with 140 guests. Gemma said: "I don't know 140 people!" Gorka continued: "So that's what I'm saying, when the wedding finished, at 1.30/2am, he was standing there saying goodbye to everybody. 20 minutes per person." Gemma added: "You have to host! You're essentially hosting the day. It's your wedding, but you are hosting everybody else. That's why when we do ours, it would need to be smaller!"
Previous Reluctance
Earlier this year, on their podcast, Gorka admitted: "I don't think I want to get married," before Gemma said: "Everyone I know who has got married has ended up getting divorced, apart from my sister." Gorka shared: "We are fine like this, we have two children, marriage is just a document, for a legal thing. You see people together for 15, 20 years, they get married then divorced one year after."
The couple met on Strictly Come Dancing in 2017, when Gemma appeared as a contestant. Sparks flew during the Strictly Live tour, and they went official in early 2018. They have two children: Mia, born in July 2019, and Thiago, born in July 2023. Gorka proposed on Valentine's Day in 2021.
Social Media Reaction
Sharing the clip on Instagram, Gorka wrote: "Went to my best friend’s wedding and spent the whole day thinking, 'Aww… maybe I do want to get married.' Then I remembered it was a big, bold Italian wedding: approximately 47 hours long, 96 degrees, and attended by half the country. So yes, I’d like the wife. The marathon wedding? Hard pass." Arduino responded with crying laughing emojis.
