Gethin Jones Breaks the News on Air

During a health segment with Dr Ranj Singh, Gethin Jones, joined by co-presenter Kimberley Walsh, paused to announce the breaking news. He said: "Ranj, we'll come back to you in just a second to talk about insect bites. Just hearing some breaking news this morning. Singer Bonnie Tyler, known for hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart, has died at the age of 75."

After reading the family's statement, Gethin added: "Sad news," as Kimberley described Tyler as a "legend." Gethin then shared a personal memory: "I met Bonnie a few years ago during the Queen's Jubilee in Swansea. She walked out and everyone just stopped. She had the most infectious, energetic personality, when it just lifts everyone." Kimberley remarked: "That voice is incredible." Gethin concluded: "Really, really sad news about Bonnie Tyler who has died at the age of 75."

Health Struggles Before Her Death

A friend of the singer, Liberto, had previously provided updates on Tyler's condition during an appearance on Good Morning Britain. He revealed that Tyler had been in an induced coma after emergency surgery and said: "I could not see her because she is in intensive care and we are praying to get better news. The doctors are positive with the situation, but so far, it's not that good."

Liberto explained that Tyler first felt unwell during a concert in London. "She started feeling unwell during a concert in London and went to a doctor for tests, but they didn't detect anything there. She decided to travel to the Algarve, where she began to feel severe abdominal pain. Two days later, she went to a private hospital, which urgently transferred her to the hospital in Faro because her appendix had burst and she needed emergency surgery."

Liberto also noted that Tyler's husband, Robert Sullivan, had been by her side, spending his days at the hospital and only returning home to sleep at night.

Legacy of a Welsh Icon

Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, rose to international fame in the 1970s and 1980s with her distinctive raspy voice. Her signature hit Total Eclipse of the Heart remains one of the best-selling singles of all time. She also scored hits with Holding Out for a Hero and It's a Heartache. Tyler sold over 20 million records worldwide and represented the United Kingdom in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.

Her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow musicians across the globe. BBC Morning Live continues to air weekdays on BBC One from 9:30 am.
