Freddie Flintoff's BBC Era Ends as Field of Dreams Gets Shelved
Cricketer-turned-presenter Freddie Flintoff is reportedly severing ties with the BBC, with his acclaimed series Field of Dreams being permanently shelved by the broadcaster. The former England cricket star, who won an Ashes series for his country, captivated audiences with his heartfelt passion project that saw him return to his Preston roots to inspire working-class teenagers to take up cricket.
No Ongoing BBC Projects for Flintoff
Following three successful seasons, the BBC has confirmed there are no current plans for Field of Dreams to return. The latest season saw Flintoff expand the initiative by launching three additional teams, including one specifically for girls. This decision means the 48-year-old currently has no ongoing work with the corporation, marking a significant shift in his broadcasting career.
A BBC spokesperson acknowledged the show's success, stating: "We are incredibly proud of the RTS award-winning series Field Of Dreams and, while there are no current plans for it to return, we want to thank Freddie, producers South Shore and all the contributors for three fantastic series."
ITV Move on the Horizon
According to industry reports, Flintoff is preparing to announce new projects with ITV, signalling a potential defection from the BBC. A source revealed: "This is a huge development as when Freddie signed for Top Gear in 2019, he increasingly started to become a face of the BBC. Although he wasn't exclusive to the corporation, by early 2022, he delivered Field Of Dreams for BBC One, and had BBC Two motor renovation show, Chasing Cars, in the pipeline. But by 2023, Top Gear had been slapped on ice and the renovation show is now a distant memory."
Flintoff has previously collaborated with ITV on several occasions, fronting a revival of classic game show Bullseye and appearing as a guest judge on The Masked Singer UK.
The Top Gear Accident and Aftermath
Flintoff's BBC journey took a dramatic turn following a horrific accident during Top Gear filming in 2022. The presenter was driving a three-wheeled car at speeds exceeding 100mph at Surrey's Dunsfold Park Aerodrome when the vehicle flipped over and skidded down the track. The incident left him with broken ribs and severe facial injuries requiring extensive surgical intervention.
The BBC subsequently reached a £9 million settlement with Flintoff over the accident. The sportsman has spoken candidly about the profound impact the crash had on his mental health, spending months out of the public eye while undergoing multiple operations and battling severe anxiety.
In a deeply personal Disney+ documentary about his recovery, Flintoff revealed: "After the accident, I didn't think I had it in me to get through. This sounds awful: part of me wishes I had been killed. Part of me thinks, 'I wish I had died.' I didn't want to kill myself – don't mistake the two things – but I was thinking: 'This would have been so much easier.'"
Flintoff joined the Top Gear presenting team in 2019 alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris, but the show was halted following his accident and has remained off air since.
The Independent has contacted both the BBC and ITV for further comment regarding Flintoff's future broadcasting plans and the conclusion of his BBC partnership.
