Chloë Sevigny Opens Up About Beauty Standards and Aging in Hollywood
Chloë Sevigny on Beauty, Aging, and Hollywood Pressure

Chloë Sevigny struck a pose with a pillow while clad in a Simone Rocha silver-sequin bandeau for a new fashion spread shot by Chaumont-Zaerpour. The 51-year-old Oscar nominee donned designer duds from Saint Laurent, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Gucci, and Prada selected by stylist Robbie Spencer.

Behind the Scenes

Hairstylist Louis Ghewy coiffed Sevigny's signature blonde locks, and make-up artist Karin Westerlund defined her brows and brought out her lashes for the shoot. The New Englander has been modeling since age 17 in 1992 for Sassy magazine and Kim Gordon's fashion label X-Girl, but she has always considered herself an 'alternative, unconventional beauty.'

Honest Reflections

'I never felt pretty my whole life,' Sevigny confessed in her Harper's Bazaar cover story hitting newsstands May 5. 'There were very pretty girls in my class, very conventionally pretty, especially within the 1980s standards of what that meant. I knew that I wasn't.' The Emmy nominee definitely feels 'pressure to maintain' her appeal in Hollywood, and she appeared to hint at getting the occasional face filler: 'I'm going to do all the little things. I just haven't done the major things.'

'But I think also for women, if you were always touted as "the most beautiful woman in the world," it must be just really, really challenging,' Sevigny said. 'I don't have that. I've never felt that.'

Red Carpet Tricks

The Miu Miu FW/26 catwalker revealed one of her 'tricks' on the red carpet and runway is to crack a little smile: 'Otherwise I have a resting-bi***, dour, whatever, old-lady face, so I also have to just bring a little joy.' Sevigny noted that cell phone fan footage and the lighting on red carpets and runways is not 'doing anybody any favors' these days. 'There's no more glamour or nuance to it,' the Ryan Murphy regular said. 'As an aging woman, it sounds less enjoyable to be a part of all that, because it just feels really vulnerable and exposed, and then you're just being picked apart on the internet.'

Sevigny continued: 'Us Weekly made fun of me - they used to always make fun of me - like, "What was she thinking?"'

Upcoming Projects

The Golden Globe winner will next portray Tatum McKenzie opposite Jennifer Garner's food blogger in Minkie Spiro's eight-episode drama The Five-Star Weekend, which closes the 31st annual Nantucket Film Festival on June 22 before streaming on Peacock July 16. The small-screen adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand's 2023 novel will also feature Regina Hall, Gemma Chan, Timothy Olyphant, and Judy Greer.

'My agents sent it to me, and I was like, "This is too mainstream. My fans are not going to like it,"' Sevigny said. '[But the scripts were] really strong. It's really about a woman grieving and how she navigates that through friendships, and I know it sounds like such a sound bite, but I really feel there's really something for everybody.'

The Gen-X 'indie queen' previously passed on the role of Vivian Kensington (which went to Selma Blair) opposite Reese Witherspoon in Robert Luketic's hit comedy Legally Blonde, which went on to amass $142 million at the global box office. Sevigny will also star opposite FKA twigs in electronic duo Boy Harsher's (Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller) upcoming erotic horror thriller, The Lonely Woman.

Personal Life

On the personal front, the Atropia actress has been married to Karma Art Gallery director Siniša Mačković for six years, but they began dating in 2018. Sevigny and the Croatian 44-year-old will celebrate their son Vanja Sevigny Mačković's sixth birthday on May 2.
