Celebrity Traitors star Joe Marler mistaken for crew

In a hilarious behind-the-scenes revelation, rugby player and Celebrity Traitors contestant Joe Marler has disclosed that he was mistaken for a member of the production crew during filming of the hit BBC show.

Behind the Scenes on Celebrity Traitors

Marler, who starred in the celebrity edition alongside famous faces including comedian Alan Carr, singer Paloma Faith, presenter Jonathan Ross, and actress Celia Imrie, shared the anecdote on Channel 4's The Last Leg of the Year on New Year's Eve. Speaking to hosts Josh Widdicombe, Adam Hills, and Alex Brooker, he explained how his low-key presence led to the mix-up.

"Well, I heard that you were, like, mistaken for crew at some point. Is that right?" asked host Adam Hills. Marler joked in response, "It was quite hard work," with another presenter teasing that this may have been his secret to surviving the first week, quipping, "No one voted for you!"

'Would You Help Me With My Mic?'

The sports star then mimicked how a fellow contestant approached him, asking, "Would you help me with my mic?" Marler recounted his reply: "I'll do mine first because I am on it with you! And then I'll come and do yours." The incident highlights the unique and often surreal environment of the reality competition, hosted by Claudia Winkleman.

Marler's Top Tip for Spotting a Traitor

With the highly anticipated fourth series of The Traitors launching on BBC One on New Year's Day, Marler also offered a crucial piece of advice for new contestants. Reflecting on his own experience, where the winning Traitor was revealed to be Alan, he suggested players should be vigilant for specific physical tells.

"Look out for people who are sweating and laughing in your face every time they murder someone," Marler advised. "Because apparently that's a telltale sign and enables people to go on and win. So, yeah."

The Last Leg of the Year, which aired on 31 December, provided a comedic review of 2025's major events, from sports victories to the announced Oasis comeback tour. The show featured special guests including Sir Lenny Henry, Phil Wang, and footballer Lucy Bronze.
