The tumultuous chapter of Britney Spears' marriage to Sam Asghari has been officially closed. The pop icon and the model-actor have finalised their divorce, bringing a swift and private end to their union just over a year after they wed.
A judge in Los Angeles formally dissolved the marriage on Friday, approving a judgement that had been submitted by Asghari’s attorney. The couple managed to reach a private settlement agreement, avoiding a potentially messy and public court battle over their assets.
Terms of the Settlement
Central to the agreement was the issue of spousal support. Asghari, 30, had initially requested that Spears, 42, pay him financial support as well as cover his attorney's fees. However, the final settlement saw both parties waive their rights to any spousal support from the other.
Furthermore, each will retain their own separate property, and they have agreed to cover their own legal fees and costs. This clean break indicates a desire from both sides to make a definitive split and move on independently.
A Short-Lived Marriage
The pair tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in June 2022, a union that was seen as a fresh start for Spears following the termination of her controversial 13-year conservatorship. However, the marriage was short-lived. Asghari filed for divorce in August 2023, citing "irreconcilable differences" and stating that the couple had separated just days prior.
The divorce petition listed the date of separation as 28 July 2023, meaning the marriage lasted just over 14 months. The filing also noted that the couple had a prenuptial agreement, which likely streamlined the division of their assets.
Looking to the Future
With the divorce now legally complete, both Spears and Asghari can put this chapter behind them. The private nature of the settlement allows them both to move forward without the intense media scrutiny that often accompanies celebrity splits, offering them a chance to rebuild and focus on their respective careers and personal lives.
