Bonnie Tyler's Final Instagram Post Gains Poignant Meaning

Bonnie Tyler's final Instagram post celebrated a new piece of music that she said she was “grateful” to be part of, just weeks before her death at the age of 75.

Death Announcement

The Welsh singer, best known for hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out for a Hero and It's a Heartache, died after a recent illness, her family confirmed on Thursday. A statement on her official website read: “Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.”

The singer had been hospitalised in Portugal since May after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery. She was placed into an induced coma before later emerging, although her spokesperson said last month she remained “very unwell” in intensive care.

Final Instagram Post

Following the announcement of her death, fans flooded Tyler's Instagram page with tributes, many gathering beneath what has become one of her final posts. On May 1, Tyler shared her excitement about contributing an original song, One World One Home, to the documentary Homeless, directed by Valerio Zanoli.

The track, recorded with the Dallas Street Choir, was written to raise awareness of housing insecurity and homelessness. The documentary explores the growing housing crisis in Las Vegas, examining issues including rising rents and gaps in mental health care while telling the personal stories of people experiencing homelessness in an effort to restore dignity and challenge stereotypes.

Sharing the film's trailer, Tyler wrote: “I am grateful for the opportunity to perform on its soundtrack.” The project was particularly close to the singer's heart, with all profits from both the documentary and Tyler's song going towards helping secure affordable housing for underprivileged families.

Career Milestones

One of Tyler's final social media posts also saw MP Carolyn Harris asking the Leader of the House to join her in wishing the Welsh singer well following news of her hospitalisation during Business Questions in mid-May.

The music icon had continued celebrating career milestones in recent months. Last year, she teamed up with David Guetta and Hypaton on Together, a club reworking of Total Eclipse of the Heart. Earlier this year, the original 1983 hit surpassed one billion streams on Spotify. “I'm really happy,” Tyler said at the time. “When you think about it, there's only 8.3 billion people in the world.”

She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Robert Sullivan.
