According to the statement, Tyler died 'as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.' Her family said: 'Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.'

The singer had been treated in intensive care earlier this year after being placed in an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery. In May, she was taken to a hospital near her home in Faro, Portugal, for an emergency operation.

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler rose to international fame in the 1980s with 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', which topped charts in both the UK and US. Known for her distinctive husky voice, she also released hits such as 'Holding Out for a Hero', 'It’s a Heartache', and 'If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)'.

In 2013, she represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, with the song 'Believe in Me', finishing 19th. She was appointed MBE in 2023 for services to music.
