Bonnie Tyler Passes Away at 75

Welsh music legend Bonnie Tyler has died aged 75, her family have announced. The singer, whose real name is Gaynor Hopkins, passed away in a hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness she was being treated for. In a statement on her official website, her family said: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

Streaming Revenue Revelation

Just months before her death, Tyler revealed she received practically nothing from streaming revenue for her iconic hit 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'. The track had amassed over a billion streams. Speaking to BBC Wales, she said: "I'm really happy - when you think about it, there's only 8.3 billion people in the world." When asked whether the enormous streaming figures translate into substantial income, she confessed: "Oh, it's nothing - just about nothing."

Enduring Love for Her Hit

Despite the lack of financial reward from streaming, Tyler said she never got tired of performing 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'. "I never get tired of singing it. I love it because everyone can't wait to sing it," she explained. The song, released in 1983, remains one of the most instantly recognisable power ballads of the 1980s and continues to attract new listeners more than four decades later.

Tributes Pour In

Thousands of fans and celebrities have paid tribute to Tyler. First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said "Wales has lost an icon." Welsh broadcaster Carol Vorderman said: "As a Welsh woman Bonnie and her music represented so much to us, it was about fighting and power and living life without apology. May you rest in Musical Glory Bonnie."

Health Struggles

Tyler had been treated in intensive care after being placed in an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery. Her team had previously told fans she was no longer in a coma but remained seriously unwell. In an update on June 15, her representatives cancelled all upcoming shows but hoped autumn performances would go ahead.

Career Highlights

Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951 in Skewen, Neath, Tyler came to prominence with her 1977 album 'The World Starts Tonight' and singles 'Lost in France' and 'More Than a Lover'. Known for her distinctive husky voice, she became one of Wales' most famous musicians. 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' and 'Holding Out For A Hero' are among the best-selling singles of all time.
