The statement read: "Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for." Tyler had been receiving treatment following emergency intestinal surgery in May at a hospital near her home in Faro, Portugal. She was placed in a coma to aid recovery but remained "very unwell" in intensive care.

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler achieved international fame in the 1980s when 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' topped charts in both the UK and US. She was known for her distinctive husky voice and hits including 'Holding Out For A Hero' and 'It's A Heartache'.
