Beyoncé has sparked debate after being photographed wearing a hijab while shopping in Doha, Qatar. The 44-year-old singer, in the country with husband Jay-Z, was seen browsing at a Yves Saint Laurent store in Place Vendôme Mall, dressed in a black hijab and sunglasses.
Some social media users praised the star for respecting local customs. One wrote: 'Beyoncé wearing abaya in Qatar is my new personality … she is so humble and respectful to the culture and our religion.' Another said: 'Beyoncé in a full black abaya and hijab?? my muslim heart is literally crying rn she’s so respectful.'
However, others criticised Beyoncé for visiting Qatar due to its record on human rights, including anti-LGBTQ+ laws and treatment of migrant workers. One user wrote: 'Beyoncé shopping in Qatar the same place slammed for human rights abuses? Guess “activism” takes a break when luxury brands are involved.' Another added: 'Wish we would stop romanticising these countries as luxury hubs when they profit off of literal slave labour.'
The criticism echoes backlash faced by David Beckham for his ambassadorship during the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Comedian Joe Lycett later shredded £10,000 in protest, though the money went to LGBTQ+ charities.
Meanwhile, Jay-Z visited the National Museum of Qatar, with an Instagram post saying: 'We’re happy to welcome Jay-Z to the National Museum of Qatar, where we shared the story of our nation’s rich heritage.'
