Frank Caprio, the American judge known as the 'world's nicest judge' for his compassionate courtroom manner, has died at the age of 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Caprio was the star of the reality court show 'Caught in Providence', set in the Providence Municipal Court in Rhode Island, where he handled cases from traffic violations to criminal offences. The show gained a massive following on social media, with Caprio amassing 3.3 million followers on Instagram and 1.6 million on TikTok.
A statement posted on his Instagram account said he 'passed away peacefully at the age of 88 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer'. It added: 'Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond.'
Caprio had been open about his diagnosis. In a June TikTok video, he said: 'I'm in the midst of that fight right now myself. A year and a half into my own battle with pancreatic cancer, and I hope, God willing, to one day call myself a survivor too.'
His show earned three Daytime Emmy nominations, and Caprio was nominated in 2024 for the 'Daytime Personality - Daily' award. He often credited his father, an Italian immigrant, for shaping his compassionate approach to justice.
