BBC Radio Wales Presenter Lynda Shahwan Died from Infection Following Canadian Car Crash

An inquest has revealed that BBC radio presenter Lynda Shahwan died from an infection after suffering a terrifying road crash in Canada while on a family holiday. The 53-year-old from Heath in Cardiff, who hosted the popular 'Plotcast' podcast with Radio Two gardener Terry Walton, passed away on July 19 last year, just four days after the accident.

Details of the Tragic Incident and Medical Complications

The mother-of-two was a passenger in a vehicle that overturned in North Vancouver, leaving her with a fractured rib, a collapsed lung, and abdominal bruising. She received treatment at Lions Gate Hospital and was discharged the following day. However, she was deemed unfit to fly, forcing her to remain in Canada while her husband and two sons returned home to Wales.

When her husband later tried to contact her, he called the police, who discovered Mrs Shahwan dead inside a holiday apartment on West 13th Avenue in Vancouver. The coroner recorded her cause of death as 'infective complications of injuries sustained as a consequence of a road traffic collision'. Coroner Graeme Hughes stated that a post-mortem examination determined she had developed peritonitis, an infection in her abdomen, likely resulting from the injuries sustained in the collision.

Tributes from Colleagues and the Broadcasting Community

Following her death, Radio 2 gardening expert Terry Walton, a regular on the Jeremy Vine show, expressed his grief, saying Lynda was taken 'far too soon'. He reflected on their collaboration, noting, 'My last two years of working with Lynda on the Plotcast were the most fulfilling and cherished broadcasting I have done. Our chemistry and her creative talent made every episode a gem of gardening knowledge.'

Mrs Shahwan had worked for Radio Wales for over 25 years, making a significant impact across various shows. Head of Radio Wales, Carolyn Hitt, described her as a 'very special person' and highlighted her role as Roy Noble's co-presenter, where he affectionately called her 'The Lily from Caerphilly'. More recently, she co-presented and produced the Plotcast, a podcast that appealed to thousands of listeners with gardening advice and seasonal reflections.

Veteran BBC broadcaster Roy Noble added, 'Our feelings of condolence go to Lynda's family, Sharif and the boys. It was a sudden, sudden loss to them and something we in Radio Wales cannot process. Her legacy will be always, always remembered.'

The inquest, held at Pontypridd Coroner's Court, detailed the sequence of events leading to her tragic death, underscoring the severe medical complications that arose from the initial injuries. The case has drawn attention to the risks associated with post-accident infections and the heartbreaking circumstances faced by her family.
