Bayesian Superyacht Tragedy: 7 Dead, Victims Include Mike Lynch and Daughter
Bayesian Superyacht Tragedy: 7 Dead, Victims Named

A new BBC documentary titled Millionaire Superyacht: Why Ships Sink airs on BBC Two on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 8pm, revisiting the 2024 Bayesian superyacht tragedy off Sicily. The disaster claimed seven lives, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.

The Sinking and Rescue

On August 19, 2024, the 54-meter Bayesian superyacht sank mysteriously near Porticello, Sicily, while anchored. Nearby sailors witnessed the incident and rushed to help. Despite other vessels remaining afloat, the Bayesian succumbed to extreme conditions. A total of 15 people were rescued from the sea, but seven perished.

The yacht carried 10 crew and 12 passengers. Survivors included owner Angela Bacares, Lynch's wife, and captain James Cutfield. Post-mortem examinations revealed that four victims had no water in their lungs, suggesting death by asphyxiation after the sinking.

The Victims

The seven deceased were: Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah Lynch, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer, Lynch's lawyer Christopher J. Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, and the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas. Lynch had invited friends aboard to celebrate his acquittal on fraud charges in a San Francisco trial just months earlier.

Documentary Investigation

The documentary features exclusive footage of the Bayesian wreck and new weather data analysis. Experts, including former Bayesian captain Stephen Edwards and Dr Sarah Martin, a survivor of the Red Sea dive boat Sea Story that capsized the same year, provide first-hand accounts. Marine architects and oceanographers analyze safety documents, revealing that 30% of ship sinkings involve bad weather. The film explores whether ship designs contribute to rising maritime tragedies as extreme weather becomes more common.

Background of the Bayesian

Built as Salute by Perini Navi in Viareggio, Italy, and delivered in 2008, the Bayesian was refitted in 2020. Its 72-meter mast was among the tallest globally. Owned by Angela Bacares at the time, it was withdrawn from sale earlier in 2024. The storm that struck reached force 12 on the Beaufort scale—hurricane strength—and is believed to have caused the sinking.
