Opening Night Draws Record Crowd
The Aldeburgh Festival kicked off its 2026 season with a stunning concert at Snape Maltings, featuring the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBCNOW), the Sansara Choir, and the Sacconi Quartet. The performance attracted a record audience of 2,500, according to festival organizers.
Program Highlights
The program included Benjamin Britten's "Les Illuminations" and a new commission by composer Hannah Kendall, titled "Echoes of the Tide." The Sacconi Quartet performed Britten's String Quartet No. 2, while the Sansara Choir joined BBCNOW for a powerful rendition of "War Requiem" excerpts.
Conductor Ryan Bancroft led the orchestra with precision, drawing out the emotional depth of the works. The audience responded with a standing ovation, particularly for Kendall's piece, which incorporated field recordings from the Suffolk coast.
Critical Reception
Critics praised the concert's balance of tradition and innovation. "The Aldeburgh Festival continues to honor its legacy while embracing contemporary voices," wrote music critic Fiona Maddocks in The Guardian. "Kendall's new work is a masterful addition to the repertoire."
The festival runs until July 5, with a packed schedule of concerts, talks, and community events. Highlights include performances by the Aurora Orchestra, the Tallis Scholars, and a world premiere by composer Tansy Davies.
