Alan Shearer will be back on BBC commentary duty for the World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina on Wednesday night. The Newcastle icon, 55, has become one of the nation's most popular pundits and will have his fingers crossed as the Three Lions bid to make the final for the first time since 1966.
Wife's angry outburst
Shearer has been married to his wife, Lainya, since 1991 after they met during his time at Southampton. She tends to stay out of the public eye, but fans have noted her 'ageless' looks. Shearer revealed on The Rest Is Football podcast that persuading Lainya to move north for his Blackburn Rovers transfer in 1992 was difficult. She was eight months pregnant with Chloe at the time and unimpressed with their new Lancashire home. Shearer recalled: 'She was eight months pregnant and looked at me in the car and said, "What the f*** have you done?"'
Calling out daughter's boyfriend
Shearer's eldest daughter, Chloe, is in a relationship with former rugby star Micky Young, who played for Newcastle Falcons before retiring in 2023. Shearer called Young an 'idiot' after a travel error left him stranded. On The Rest Is Football, Shearer said: 'He got on the train... 15 minutes on the train he heard the announcement, "Welcome to everyone who's got on this train to Edinburgh." And it was non-stop all the way to Edinburgh. He had to go all the way to Edinburgh... He got on the f***ing Megabus, the 10pm Megabus, which cost him £30 from Edinburgh to London and he got in at 6.45am this morning into London. So I said to him, "You are meant to be looking after my f***ing daughter in the future!"' Shearer added: 'I said, "Really?" and he said he stopped at Dunbar, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield and I said, "Oh you idiot!"'
BBC pay cut
According to the BBC's annual report, Shearer earned between £390,000 and £394,999 for his contributions to Match of the Day and live sporting events during 2025/26, down from between £440,000 and £444,499 in the prior period. Despite the reduction, he remains one of the BBC's top earners, sitting sixth on the broadcaster's known wages list. He earned more than former colleague Gary Lineker, who secured between £325,000 and £329,999 before leaving the BBC in May 2025.
