Vernon Kay has shared emotional family news with his BBC Radio 2 listeners, revealing he will be taking some time off from his show to support his youngest daughter as she prepares for university.
The 52-year-old presenter, who recently announced his separation from wife Tess Daly after nearly 23 years of marriage, told his audience that he will be absent from the station on Friday, June 19. The reason? He is taking his 17-year-old daughter Amber to university open days.
Amber is set to start university in September 2027, and Vernon is looking forward to the experience. He said: "I'm not in tomorrow. I'm having Friday off. Because I'm going to university open days. I think the time is right for me to step away from broadcasting and go back into further education." He quickly clarified he was joking, adding: "I'm taking our youngest to open days around universities and I'm really looking forward to it. It's an exciting time in life, and also I get to hold her hand."
Vernon and Tess also share an eldest daughter, Phoebe, who is 21. The family has been going through a difficult period after confirming their amicable split last month.
In a lighter moment on the show, Vernon was playfully scolded by his producer Janine Maya-Smith for not complimenting her new hairstyle. He admitted it was a "rookie error," saying: "I live in a house full of ladies, do you know what I mean? I should've known. I apologise Janice, it was a rookie error, it was a big mistake."
The family continues to live together in their six-bedroom home in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, with no immediate plans for either Vernon or Tess to move out.
