Sydney Martin on Coronation Street Betsy Stroke Storyline and Friends

Coronation Street's Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) has suffered two strokes triggered by consensual strangulation during a sexual encounter with Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne), a storyline that has sparked widespread debate among fans. The 24-year-old actress, who plays the teenager, has relied on her real-life best friends and fellow soap stars Cait Fitton and Isabelle Smith for support throughout the intense plot.

Controversial Storyline Sparks Debate

Martin acknowledged the divisive nature of the storyline, telling Metro: "I always knew it was going to be very divided, very contrasting. It seems to have been quite well-received, but also, for the older generations, it wasn't going to be as palatable. But I think that's exactly what we wanted." She added: "Negative or positive, people are talking about it, and that's exactly the reaction we wanted."

The actress, who researched the issue extensively, worked with charities including Safeline, the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS), and the Stroke Association. A recent IFAS study of over 4,100 young adults aged 16-34 found that more than 55% have either been strangled or strangled someone else during sex. Every year, around 85,000 people survive a stroke in the UK, with recovery often being long and life-changing.

Shocking Statistics and Legal Implications

Martin was particularly struck by the statistics: "When I first got told about it, I learnt that it takes more pressure to open a can of Coke than it does to cause brain damage. There was a study where they did a blood test on 30 women, 15 who had partaken and 15 who hadn't, and the 15 who had all showed signs of brain damage."

The storyline also highlights the legal consequences: even though Dylan did not intend to harm Betsy, causing such injuries could result in a prison sentence of up to five years. Martin expressed empathy for both characters: "There's the added layer of her being in this really safe relationship where this awful thing has happened... there's no bad guy in it."

Support from Soap Star Friends

Martin's close friends Cait Fitton (who played Lauren Bolton in a grooming storyline on Coronation Street) and Isabelle Smith (who portrayed Frankie Dean in Hollyoaks' sibling incest abuse story) have been instrumental. "They are my biggest rocks throughout it all," Martin said. "Soap is such a unique world, and a very misunderstood world... I told them as soon as I heard in November. I rang up Izzy and spoke to Cait straight away. They were nothing but supportive."

She added: "If I'm very hard on myself or I've had a particularly hard day at work, I can just ring them, and they get it." Martin also received support from Emmerdale's Mark Charnock, who portrayed a stroke storyline as Marlon Dingle.

Behind the Scenes and Future Storylines

The actress praised the in-house prosthetics created by the make-up department, led by Alex Hargreaves, for Betsy's post-stroke appearance. Directors Chantelle Kayll and Jordan Hogg helmed the initial episodes. Looking ahead, viewers will see Betsy undergo physio and recovery, while the impact on her mothers Lisa (Vicky Myers) and Carla Connor-Swain (Alison King) is explored, along with the legal ramifications for Dylan.

Martin concluded: "Whether young people watch it, or parents of young people who watch it and then strike up these conversations, it can really make a difference."
