Nobel Peace Prize 2026: Pope Leo and Carney among favourites

The winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced at 11am local time (10am BST) in Oslo, Norway, with more than 250 candidates nominated for the award.

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the prize, which has been awarded to 112 individuals and 28 separate institutions since it was first given in 1901. The Red Cross has won three times and the UN refugee agency twice.

Favourites and nominees

While the list of nominees is a closely guarded secret, bookies suggest possible contenders this year include Pope Leo XIV, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, the International Space Station, emergency teams in Sudan, children's advocates in Ukraine and two top international courts.

US President Donald Trump, who has long coveted the prize and repeatedly said he deserves it, once again looks unlikely to win.

History of the prize

Women have accounted for just 20 of the 112 individual laureates. However, eight women have received the prize in the past 15 years.
