ITV viewers were united in their reaction following a historic moment at the National Television Awards, as Sir David Attenborough clinched the Best Presenter trophy, beating Ant and Dec once again.
Honouring the finest in British television, the star-studded ceremony made its return to screens once more. Joel Dommett resumed his presenting role, broadcasting live from the O2 Arena in London.
A host of major celebrities were present to present awards across numerous categories, including factual entertainment, best new drama, daytime, talent show, returning drama and others.
Historic Win for Sir David Attenborough
One of the evening's most eagerly awaited honours was Best Presenter. The previous year's event delivered one of the NTAs' biggest shocks when Ant and Dec's remarkable run finally ended.
Having claimed the Best Presenter trophy 23 consecutive times, the I'm A Celebrity and Britain's Got Talent duo were defeated by former Match of the Day host Gary Lineker. This year, Mastermind presenter Clive Myrie took to the stage to announce the nominees and victor, reports the Daily Star.
The shortlist featured Alison Hammond, Ant and Dec, Claudia Winkleman, Sir David Attenborough and Stacey Solomon. Myrie disclosed that the National Television Award went to Sir David Attenborough for Secret Garden.
Attenborough's Message of Gratitude
Although Sir David was unable to attend in person to collect the accolade, executive producer Mark Brownlow took to the stage on his behalf. Addressing the audience, he admitted: "Sorry I'm not David. I've worked closely with him on a number of different shows. Here are some words from the most trusted broadcaster who is in the 101st year of his life."
Attenborough's speech expressed gratitude for the recognition while also issuing a passionate plea for greater protection of wildlife and its preservation for generations to come. He said: "It's possible to make small differences. If enough small differences are made, they do something significant."
Fans React to the Result
Those watching at home were quick to share their reaction to the moment, with the overwhelming majority agreeing that Sir David was thoroughly deserving of the honour.
One viewer simply stated: "Sir David Attenborough. Legend." Another added: "There will never be another like Sir David Attenborough and I'm sure the other presenters that lost also agree - he deserves all the awards he can get."
A third remarked: "Massively wanted Ant and Dec to win tonight but how can you win against a National Treasure like Mr David Attenborough! The man is a legend and deserves it 100%."
