Prince Harry is reportedly hoping to make a film about his mother, Princess Diana. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death, with events and tributes planned in advance. A royal expert has said that the Duke of Sussex will be looking to mark his mother’s death with a film.
Approaching Diana’s friends
Daily Mail's Senior Editor-at-Large, Richard Kay, has said that the prince has already begun approaching Diana’s friends for a project. Kay added that this could add strain to Harry’s relationship with Prince William. The pair haven’t spoken in the better part of four years and were last seen at King Charles’ coronation in 2023 and their uncle Lord Robert Fellowes’ funeral in 2024.
“Diana has dominated the thinking of both William and Harry for the last ten years,” Kay said on Palace Confidential. “When they made, nine years ago, those documentaries to mark the 20th anniversary of their mother's death, that was the last time they were really in step together.
Harry’s own film
“I am told that one of the reasons Harry's here is to make a television film, his own film, about his mother. I know he has been reaching out to his friends and others who knew her, asking them to contribute. That's going to occupy a lot of his headspace over the next 12 months.”
But there are those who have said that the anniversary would force the brothers to reconcile. Royal biographer Robert Jobson said: "How can they not be together? There's going to be a moment where there has to be some form of arrangement for the 30th anniversary of Diana's death. They have to be on the same stage."
William’s frustration
Kay added that “William is just as much his mother's son as Harry is”, and Harry trying to claim the Diana legacy for himself, causes “intense frustration” for William. He said: “This issue of trying to use Diana, the Spencer brand, the Spencer name, to divide himself away from the House of Windsor, I think is something we're going to see even more of. Let's not forget who Harry spent time with when he was here in July, it was Diana's family at Althorp.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, alongside their children, stayed with Harry’s uncle Charles, Earl Spencer, at the family estate, Althorp, when they visited the UK in July. Earl Spencer, Diana’s brother, is also writing a book about the Princess that will be released later this month. The book will aim to help people understand who Diana really was, titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
