Gabby Logan on working with Wayne Rooney on Match of the Day

Gabby Logan has opened up about her working relationship with Wayne Rooney on Match of the Day, describing the former Manchester United forward as a "spontaneous" and thoughtful pundit who is harassed by fans wherever he goes.

Logan, who now presents the BBC show alongside Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates after Gary Lineker stepped down in 2025, has worked more closely with Rooney in recent years as the 40-year-old became a regular pundit and featured prominently in the corporation's World Cup coverage.

A global star who can't escape attention

In an interview with The Times, Logan detailed just how popular Rooney is worldwide. She said: "Wayne Rooney gets harassed everywhere. He gets people coming up and taking selfies in his face. When we were in Paris, I said, 'Is there anywhere you can go in the world?' and he said, 'No.'"

Praising his approach to punditry, she added: "He's great to work with. He likes to be spontaneous. He's very thoughtful when he does his analysis, but he's also good fun because he's got so many anecdotes."

Rooney on his punditry purpose

Rooney, who also works with Logan on Amazon's Champions League coverage, has explained that his move into punditry gives him purpose. On his Disney+ documentary, The Real Rooneys, he said: "I'm not doing it for money, I'm doing it for a purpose rather than just being at the house all day. There's a possibility I'll never manage again, so moving forward... I need a role on The Masked Singer, but I'd get hammered."

Reflecting on his time as a manager, Rooney added: "I'm a realist I think you know as a player when your career is going to end and you can prepare for that. So the next stage in management for instance you don't know whether you'll be there a year, two years, 10 years or three months. You're not prepared when you lose the job. I'm enjoying Match of the Day and it's time to learn and get better at what I'm doing."
