The One Show hosts JB Gill and Angellica Bell paid an emotional tribute to country music icon Dolly Parton after her death aged 80. The news was confirmed by her family on Tuesday night, 25 August.
Parton was celebrated for her groundbreaking hits including 9 To 5, I Will Always Love You and Jolene. The singer had cancelled her Las Vegas residency earlier this year after saying her health needed a 're-build'.
Family announcement
In a video posted across Dolly's social media platforms, her nephew confirmed her death. Brian Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, said he was representing the Parton and Owens family in announcing the passing of his aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean.
He described her as "Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next." He noted that the video announcement was something Dolly had asked of him years ago, before he fully absorbed it as a future reality.
Tribute from The One Show
On Tuesday's The One Show, which broadcast just as the news emerged, presenters JB Gill and Angellica Bell delivered an emotional tribute to the 'big friend of the show' at the programme's conclusion.
JB, 39, said: "Now just before we go, like many of you, we've just heard the very sad news that the legendary Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80."
He added: "She was a big friend of the show, having been on many times, and was loved by people all over the world. So our thoughts are very much with her family, friends and fans. We'll be paying tribute in tomorrow's show."
Parton's husband Carl Dean passed away last year at the age of 82. The One Show airs on weeknights at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
