Harry Styles has revealed the reason behind his three-year break between his 2023 tour and his latest album, admitting he was struggling with the pressure and expectations of fans.
Pressure and Expectations
Following the success of his Love On Tour, which ended in July 2023 after almost two years and 169 shows, Styles took a three-year hiatus. The 32-year-old returned this year with his solo record, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, which has also seen him embark on a world tour. This time around, he is performing only 67 concerts as part of residencies in Amsterdam, London, São Paulo, Mexico City, New York City, Melbourne, and Sydney, including 30 nights at Madison Square Garden and a record-breaking 12 nights at London's Wembley Stadium.
In a new interview with W Magazine, Styles said he needed to take "time off" to prioritise "living from the inside out", rather than worrying about opinions or pressures. He said: "A big part of the break was about recalibrating the image of myself that I felt I was accidentally swallowing all the time – that was being reflected back at me, but that I didn't want necessarily."
Vulnerable After Shows
He explained that there was "so much emphasis" on his work being solely about him, which is "a really complex relationship to have with yourself." Instead, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, was a project that focused on what he "really loves" without the perception of what fans and external critics want.
Coming off stage after performing to thousands, Styles admits he struggles to shake off the "godlike" image he has amongst his fans. He said: "When I come offstage, the first thing I do is shower, because it's better for me to feel like I washed it off. There's a version where you come offstage and feel like, 'Oh, I'm the guy right now'. I remember that from the really early days, the 'How do I stay in this feeling—this is amazing!'"
He added: "Over the years, I've tried to acknowledge that is that and I can wash it off. You do the show, you go backstage, you shower, and all of a sudden you're naked in this most vulnerable, almost infant-like state of yourself. It couldn't be more different from what you were doing 10 minutes ago."
Career Background
Styles, aged just 16, rose to global fame in the band One Direction, alongside Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and the late Liam Payne. They all auditioned for the X Factor as solo artists, but when facing being sent home at bootcamp, Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger created the group.
As a band, they sold over 70 million records worldwide, while Styles, as a soloist, has sold over 42 million since his debut with Fine Line in 2019. The full interview is available at W Magazine.
