Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, just over a year after her husband of almost 60 years, Carl Thomas Dean, passed away. The couple never had any children, a decision shaped by health struggles and personal reflection.
Carl Thomas Dean died on March 3, 2025, aged 82, in Nashville. The pair would have marked their 59th wedding anniversary in May. Despite their decades-long marriage, they remained childless throughout their lives together.
Endometriosis diagnosis and surgery
In her 2017 book Dolly on Dolly: Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton, the Jolene singer revealed she had been diagnosed with endometriosis at the age of 35. This condition, where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb grow in other parts of the body, can lead to severe period pain, heavy periods, and infertility.
The singer underwent a partial hysterectomy at 36. She wrote in her book: "Suddenly I was a middle-aged woman. I went through a dark time."
Dolly's reflections on motherhood
Dolly spoke openly about being childless throughout her career. She told Billboard in 2014: "Early on, when my husband and I were dating, and then when we got married, we just assumed we would have kids."
"We weren't doing anything to stop it. In fact, we thought maybe we would. We even had names if we did, but it didn't turn out that way," reports the Express. "Now that Carl and I are older, we often say: 'Aren't you glad we didn't have kids? Now we don't have kids to worry about.'"
Nine years later, in an interview with Saga Magazine, Dolly was asked whether she had any regrets about not starting a family. She replied: "I haven't missed it like I thought I might. When you're a young couple, you think you're going to have kids, but it just wasn't one of those burning things for me."
"I had my career and my music, and I was travelling. If I'd had kids, I'd have stayed at home with them. I'm sure and worried myself to death about them."
She added: "With everything that's going on, I'd hate to be bringing a child into this world right now! I always say God didn't let me have children so that all kids could be mine."
